Final Project Blog

Music has the power to stimulate strong emotions within us. Music has been reported to evoke the full range of human emotion from sad, nostalgic and tense, to happy, relaxed and empowering. Most of us listen to music in order to experience emotions, concentrate, or to overcome what’s bringing us down. Emotions are also contagious. When exposed to sounds or videos we’re likely to experience similar expressions and feelings while observing. Here I am going to share with you two songs that I believe have great messages and can connect emotionally to many.

“Fight Song” – Rachel Platten

This song is written and song by Rachel Platten along with other writers David Bassett and Jon Levine and is from the album Wildfire released February 19, 2015 in the United Sates. This song is empowering, anthemic, honest, raw and emotional says songwriter Rachel. This song was written by Rachel and a reflection on her life, she has been rejected dealt with struggles but she wouldn’t give up on herself and created an empowering song.

The song starts out rather slow and sad, you feel the pain of being let down and upset. Rather quickly, the beat starts to pick up immediately followed by stronger lyrics. This fight song  is about fighting for and taking ownership of your life. This song is very empowering for one who may feel down or going through something tough and that no matter what they do they are being pushed down. You need to fight for what you believe in even when no one else does. “…I don’t really care if nobody else believes. I’ve still got a lot of fight left in me.” This song can easily speak to many people. Everyone is faced with obstacles during their life. You can take it two ways, let it get the best of you and bring you down or you can fight.

There is a variety of musical instruments in this song. Ranging from piano, guitar and the drums. The beat is very steady and it’s uses a variety of sounds. Ranging from 70-89 BPM. Then, as the music progresses, the beat changes, more upbeat and fast. The tempo of this song starts off slow, then goes faster. The mood for this song is created by the melody. In the beginning of the song, its rather slow feeling down about yourself, then later on it progresses into a faster more powerful song.

“Rise Up” –Andra Day

Rise Up” by Andra Day and Jenn Decilveo is from the album Cheers To the Fall released August 28, 2015. The lyrics have become an anthem for Black Lives Matter and performed for Mothers of the Movement, who lost their sons to police or gun violence. “There’s a lot going on culturally and socially right now that needs to be talked about… What you do in music can change people’s lives and affect them in a real way.” (Andrea, suntimes.com)

Rise Up is a rather slow song, 60 MPB, that is about strength and power. The slower tempo makes this emotional and sad. Listening to the lyrics, you will hear the phrase “I’ll rise up” several times. When the song speeds up during the chorus you can start to relate to the song. Watching the video and listening to the lyrics you feel the strength that Andra is trying to show. This song will make you want to rise up and not give up even when you are going through something tough. It’s all about staying strong and going on even when you’re tired.

This course helped me look at music in a completely different way and helped me deal with personal issues. I chose to write about empowering, and share emotions that songs have on us. I recently dealt with a tragic loss of my father and music has helped me through the process so much. Music has empowered me, it has kept me going even on the bad days. This class has taught me to look deeper into music. I learned that there is more to music than just the way it sounds. Music uses metaphors, and really makes you connected on a personal level. Music is empowering and can have strong emotions behind the lyrics. Cultures use music to communicate and pass down stories from one generation to another. I will continue to learn music in the new way I see and hear it. Thank you!

  1. I’m glad you mentioned music being passed down through the generations culturally to tell a story of the past. This is important in society, especially one that continues to experience a drift in human connection. The more we rely on technology the more further apart we are to our humanistic senses. Even though we may feel like were all connected because of the internet and social media networks, doesn’t necessarily bring us closer together. Music is important in many aspects and especially in the context of passed story telling and history. The Star Spangled Banner is a great example of this. Our National Anthem is used everyday and invokes a spirit of emotion that makes us feel proud as well as tells a story of the past. Thanks for you post. I too wrote of musics contribution, if you’d like to read my blog on it. https://slclistener.wordpress.com

  2. These are such powerful songs! Music definitely has a way of sparking emotion in its listeners and have the capability of starting a movement. Words have a way of motivating people or bringing emotion upon them. The “Rise Up” song has also been performed by choirs across the country because of it s powerful message. An article about a group performing the song in Baltimore can be found here: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2017/10/13/these-baltimore-children-singing-andra-days-rise-up-moving-people-tears/761086001/

I also agree that this class has influenced the way I look at music. I specifically enjoyed learning how music can communicates emotion in movies and such.

  3. Sorry to hear about the loss of your father. I lost my father ten years ago and I still miss him dearly. Music can definitely help us through tough times such as these.

The songs you chose are great songs! I love one the following lyrics from the rhe “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten: “I have only one match, but I can make an explosion!” We are all dealing with our own situations and even though we think it’s the last straw, that last straw can take us places if we fight for it!

I have never heard of the second song you chose, “Rise Up” by Andrea Day. Thanks for introducing me to this song. It is a very powerful song! I loved her voice and her compassion as she sang this song, really uplifts the soul.

I”ll share this song with you: “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus. I chose this song for my first blog assignment. I love listening to this song and it keeps me going at times of uncertainty.

  4. Hi McKenzie,

I will admit, I had to take a moment to compose myself after listening to “Rise Up,” and watching the video. Although it made me sad, it was also very inspiring and empowering to listen to. Andra Day has such a beautiful voice, and the vibrato in her singing adds a feeling of raw emotion to the song. I think that it is wonderful that music can elicit such real emotion from us as listeners. I agree with you that emotion is a big part of why we listen to music, as it helps us connect with our experiences, and even with the experiences of those around us. When I think about how I reacted to “Rise Up,” I imagine all of the people in the world who have had the same reaction, and when I watched the video, I imagined all of the people in the world that live with hardship and rise above it. I think that it is wonderful that Andra Day recognizes that her music can make a big difference in peoples lives, and have influence in our society.

I found an absolutely amazing article that provides more information about how music connects us as a society. Scientists have conducted many studies showing the changes in our brains that are brought about by music, such as how people who are listening to the same music become more in sync with one another. I highly recommend reading it, it was very interesting.

  5. I completely agree! Music can be so powerful because of how universal it is. It’s almost like it’s own language that anyone can understand.
I am really sorry to hear of your loss, but I am glad to hear you are getting through it. Music has helped me get through extremely dark times as well. This is a song that I used to listen to whenever I would get in a mood (warning: it is “heavy” metal):

This song has helped me so much personally that I will be getting the bridge tattooed on me. Highly recommend looking up the lyrics. I understand that this genre is not hugely popular but like I said earlier, universal meanings are still there. Thanks for the post!

  6. Hello, I love the first song that you choose to use. It really does have “emotions in the song and it can help people get through things that are hard for them.” This song is one of my favorite songs to listen to. There are many songs in the world that have “emotion” connected to them and this song is the first one that comes to mind, good pick. You did a great job explaining the “elements of music in this post.”
I had never heard of the second song that you choose until I listened to it. This song as well has “emotions” in it. There are many other songs that would go with this idea. Also i think that this is a good pick too and you did a good explaining it in your post.

  7. Mlsyverson,
“Rise Up” was just breathtaking. Thank you so much for introducing me to this raw and lovely song! I love that you focused on music as empowerment. I think anyone who has worked out at the gymn or went running knows that music has the power to give you the strength to push on when you had thought all strength was gone.
Put on that Rocky Balboa theme song, and what happens? I can hit that punching bag, fit in that last push up, get up again from the ground.
To go along with that vibe, one summery do-wop song that carries that same punch is Aaradhna’s “Wake Up.”
mpty pizza boxes on the floor
    Empty liquor bottles from before
You’ll find your comfort in between the sheets
Way to afraid to take it to the streets
Confidence just went out the window
So down can’t get up can’t move no more
Life is passing by and your poor soul is gone ooh

    [Chorus: x2]
    Wake Up (Wake Up)
    Wake Up
    Get Up
    Get Up
    (Get Up)
    Get out of bed.
    Stop wasting time

Be forewarned, this does have a cuss word in the second verse.
It is totally worth listening to though- to shake it off, get back on ones feet and wake up!
Thanks so much for sharing your music and passion!!!!
    Merry Christmas, Mlsyverson.
    All the best to you,
    Maica
