Continued Explorations – Tarzan

Tarzan is a 1999 American animated drama adventure film produced by Walt Disney Pictures. Disney’s animated tale, the orphaned Tarzan (Tong Goldwyn) grows up in the remote African wilderness, raised by the gentle gorilla Kala (Glenn Close). Years later, Tarzan begins to befriend other animals, but finds himself treated differently because of his physique. When a British expedition enters the jungle, Tarzan encounters Jane (Minnie Driver) and recognizes that, like her, he’s human. Falling in love with Jane, Tarzan is torn between embracing civilization and staying with his gorilla family.

You’ll Be in My Heart” is a song by Phil Collins, from the 1999 Disney animated feature Tarzan. The song, originally called “Lullaby” is used in a scene when Tarzan’s adoptive gorilla mother Kala sings that her baby should stop crying because she will protect her baby, and keep him safe and warm. She says everything will be find and she tells him that “you will be in my heart always”. The song is about how love is a bond that cannot be broken, and sets the tone and relationship between Kala and Tarzan throughout the entire movie. The song comforts Tarzan and shows that even if physically separated the love between them will still be there in spirit.

You’ll Be in My Heart by Tarzan is in the key of C Major but stars from the F# Major. The song has a rather slow tempo of 96 BPM. The Verses are fairly similar, however there are some changes in the rhythmic pattern. The bridge which takes the up-tempo nature of the song down before swinging back into the high-tempo ending “You’ll Be in My Heart“.

  1. I love most of the animated Disney films and they do a such great job incorporating wonderful songs such as these into their movies. Phil Collins has such a smooth and easy listening voice to listen to. The lyrics are very heartwarming…I have two daughters and they are the ones I immediately thought of as I was listening to the lyrics.

Songfacts.com stated this regarding this song: “According to Lily Collins, who was born in 1989, her dad wrote this song for her. “It was written as a lullaby to me when I was younger,” she told NBC in 2016. “We grew up watching Disney shows and movies together so that was his way of kind of being able to do it for his kids. It was so special.””

  2. I like Tarzan and Phil Collins. This just reminded me that my kids have never seen Tarzan. I don’t think I actually own this one. My husband is a huge Phil Collins fan. I am used to hearing songs like “In the Air Tonight” while driving down the road and having my husband bust out singing and drumming on the steering wheel.

I love Phil Collins’ voice. Another one of his songs I enjoy is “I Don’t Care Anymore.” https://youtu.be/C6PNc9KN50M

  3. Growing up in California, my family and I occasionally made trips to Disneyland. Part of the park incorporates a jungle gym representing the film Tarzan. I agree that the song ”You’ll be in my heart” tells a story within the film. The emotion in the lyrics makes the song so powerful. In my high school American sign language class, one of my friends performed this song in sign, I think you’d enjoy watching a similar performance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1SBTLx1T0M Even without lyrics, visually there is so much emotion.
